The Form of the Hash
Hashing takes the form of paper (sawdust) chase beginning and ending at a place decided by a volunteer member (hare) who is responsible for the organisation of that week's meeting. The course is laid with a number of breaks (checks) so that the less fit (back markers) can pause for breath while the more athletic (front runners) search for the next stage.
Runners who by some chance happen to be in front shout the famed Hash Cry 'On On' so that those behind can follow the calls rather than the trail.
Upon coming to a check they shout 'Checking' until the next part of the trail is found, thereafter 'On On' etc...
Hashers run at a gentle and becoming pace and help their less fit colleagues rather than make a dirty dash for the finish, leaving the slower ones to find the trail home unaided, resulting in lost drinking time for those unfortunates!
The Aquila Hash House Harriers run on Wednesday evenings at 18:30hrs during the summer months and on Sunday mornings at 10:00hrs during the winter.
Administration of the Hash
Responsibility for the direction, control and operation of Aquila Hash House Harriers is vested in a President, 2 Joint Masters, a Secretary and a Treasurer. (See 'Contacts Page')
All are honorary appointments and the incumbents are affectionately referred to as the On Pres, JMs, On Sec and Hash Cash respectively. The On Sec and JMs are responsible for the smooth running of the Hash. Successors are appointed by the On Pres, JMs and On Sec who form the Hash House Harriers Hierarchy (H4). The On Pres and JMs may appoint committees from time to time from volunteers to organise and oversee Hash social and other activities.
Hash Rules
There are very few rules because the Hash is comprised of honourable gentlefolk, but experience has proved the wisdom of the following:
(a) Each week the Hares are entirely responsible for all arrangements for their Hash (selection of the area for their run, the start point (RV) and its notification to On Sec. In choosing the RV, Hares should allow parking space for cars either at the RV or nearby. Sawdust must be obtained from the Hash Trash Store and the trail should be laid in accordance with the Guidelines for Laying a Hash Trail (see below)).
(b) The Country Code must be scrupulously adhered to at all times by Hares and Hounds alike.
(c) The owner's permission must be obtained when the proposed trail is planned to cross private land or off recognised rights of way.
